The job of the Doctor

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a doctor? I bet you have as a kid or maybe as you prepare for 'higher education'. One thing we never think about when we think of Doctors is the hard part of their job the part where you have to sit someone down look them in the face and with complete compassion (while holding it together) say "Sir I am sorry I have some bad news, your sick and your dieing and unless we operate right away your going to die". But have you ever thought beyond that, what about the person who wont accept that they are sick and need help or they will die. What do you say to the person who after having just been told they have an aggressive form of cancer that must be operated on today, they look you in the face and say "But doctor I am not sick". What then?

Being a Christian is like that except in the case of the Christian there are not enough doctors and the patients that are the sickest have convinced the other patients they are not sick as well. It is truly as Christ said a harvest without enough harvesters. The Chief surgeon has offered to do all of the surgeries that may be required, the price has already been paid by a man nailed to a cross. But what good was it for him to pay that price if the one he offered it for will not accept it? If the sick man not only says to the Chief Surgeon but also to the man who having no obligation too, offers to pay for the surgery, and an expensive one at that.

Or what is worse when the sick man first accepts the surgery but then declares he does not want it to hurt. Does he have any right to say it must not hurt? What right in fact does he have, someone else has paid the price which the sick man himself could not afford and the surgeon the Chief surgeon is preforming the surgery sometimes under the worst conditions but the sick man is guaranteed that while the surgery will hurt, and while his recovery will be slow and painful; he will indeed recover, he will be alive to recover and he will be okay in the end. Is this not the case of many Christians today?

And what of those who after having been told the Chief surgeon will preform the surgery and that another has paid its price, what then when they declare themselves healed? The surgery has not yet been preformed, only the consent has been given. It can take years once begun a life time to complete. Searching the body from head to toe for the cancer one cell at a time, cleansing it cutting out the foul disease. And what is worse? To be the patient under the knife in agonizing pain screaming for the doctor to stop knowing he can't, or to be the Doctor preforming the surgery hearing the man you are trying to save scream holler and beg for you to stop. And this often times is why it takes so long because the Chief Surgeon having been begged sufficiently does stop, and the man returns again and again knowing the procedure must be completed knowing the surgeon must finish or you will die. And in some cases when the sick man returns to have the procedure worked on more to his horror he finds it has spread.

Being a doctor is awesome and horrible, and being a Christian is not any better.

Credo

I believe.

In the Original Text it is written in the first person giving the one taking the Oath personal responsibility for what they are claiming to believe.

In One God The Father the Omnipotent.

While the vast majority of texts translate "Almighty" the word used in the Original is actually "Omnipotentem" which literally translates Omnipotent. Almighty sounds nicer true but it does not give the same feel or image to the line. Omni-potent: All powerful, All potential.

Creator the Celestial and the Terrestrial.

This is a line that eats at me every time I see it because while I think it is accurate literally translated the line is Factor(think of a factory) of celestial and terrestrial. I never know weather to translate it Creator of Heaven and Earth or Creator of the celestial and the terrestrial, one is a more modern term for the exact same thing though Language wise the Latter is more accurate.

All things visible and invisible.

Here the text exactly says "visible and all invisible", the reason for changing the order of the words (putting all first) and adding a word (things) is because of the lines relation to the previous line. What is being said is Creator of the Celestial and the Terrestrial all things visible and invisible. In Latin there is no exact set word order required to convey a message you can say the same thing 10 different ways and it still comes out to mean the exact same thing. Like in Spanish (which I only know enough of to get me in trouble) when you want to convey a message you can leave words out (you, things, are two examples) depending upon how you structure the sentence because the word is implied by the structure of the sentence and the other words used.

And in One Lord Jesus the Christ, the Son of God.

Again the exact translation is and in one Lord Jesus Christ. Accurately Christ is a title and in Latin there really is no "the" to indicate a name is a title so I can say "Deus Rex" which literally means God King but what says is God (the) King with king being a title. Et works as: and, the, also, and other such words. But depending on what your saying you leave Et as implied especially most cases where it applies to the use of the word "The".


The Son of God one genetics
As for the "Son God" being "The Son of God"; 'the' and 'of' explain the relationship of The Son to God. "unigenitum" would translate close to 'one genetics' or 'of one gene'. I have seen i translated "one in being" however this does not accurately portray the view we have of the relationship between the Father and the Son. the reason it is not accurate is because it is difficult (in trinitarian terms) to define being a persons. for most people because each person is a being its hard to get ones mind around, as far as genetics go most people nowadays know what they are or at least have some basic clue and a gene is a substance their for substance is closer to the original meaning of the text.

And with the Father produced all nature the world.

Here the translation is nearly perfect, the word order is slightly changed for grammatical reasons. The word for word translation is And Father nature produced all world. The problem here is an obvious one and easy to correct; the previous line was speaking about the oneness of the Father and the Son, and this is the first time we are hearing of nature. So we can conclude that the Father and Nature didn't produce all the world, but that the Father and the Son produced all Nature. The word 'produced" which the Latin word used is "ante" has no exact English translation.

God from God

The word "from" is de in Latin.

Here the Latin text says "génitum non factum," genitum is akin to begotten, facturm again think factory but so it makes sense i used the word created.

Consubstantial with the Father

this line is really just reinforcing "unigenitum" rather than saying with one genetics they use the word Con(Latin and English for 'With') substance. So you could say With one substance or with substance. The reason for reinforcement of the "one genetics" "one substance" idea is because the time the creed was written it was written to combat Arianism. Arius denied that Jesus was both God and Man and Equal to the Father.

For who all things were made

Who on behalf us men and on behalf of our salvation(goodness) decended from the Celestial.

The Latin 'propter' has no precise English term but it translates roughly as "on behalf". 'nos' is our us or we. 'hómines' relates to homo or man, and 'salútem" literally translates into salvation, salvation in its English form as well as Latin means well being or good.

and was incarnated by the Holy Spirit with the Virgin Mary and was created man.

The word for word translation is something like "and incarnated was the Spirit Saint with Mary Virgin and man factored is" the line is in correlation with the previous one thus referring to Christ so we know it wasnt the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary who was incarnated but Jesus.

crucified truly for us under Pontus Pilate, died and was burried;

the last half of the line "died and was burried" 'passus et sepúltus est;' it literally means he passed and sepulcher, or passed and was placed in the sepulcher.

and resurrected on the third day according to the scripture,

and ascended in to the celestial, seated at the right hand of the Father

and once again favored is coming in glory judging the the living and the dead; and his kingdoms reign without end.

And in The Holy Spirit, Lord and life giver:

Exactly it is "and in Spirit Saint, Lord (dominate or master) and life giver"

Who from Father and Son proceeds

Who with Father and Son similarly is adored and with them is Glorified.

Who Spoke per the Prophets;

And in One Sanctified Catholic and Apostolic Church

the word Catholic means Universal, Jesus prayed in the Garden that the Church may be one this is why the word Catholic is used because of the belief in a Universal Church. Church in the line Apostolic is more properly Ecclesia or Ecclesiastical, but because of the general disuse of the word no one would know what it meant

and expect the resurrection of the dead and living and the coming world. Amen

This is the best i could do its a modified version of a translation and its scripture ref. I found. Like most translations of the Creed i have found however it is left wanting and though it conveys the intent of the original creed(Here I am Speaking of its Latin version as I cannot speak or read Greek) it is not as close to the original translation as I would like it. As i said I have already made a few alterations to it however when I post the corrections Later I will explain what the correction is and why I translated it the way I did.

True Devotion

I started reading again recently a book called "True Devotion to Mary" by Saint Louis Marie De Montfort. This is not a big book but dont let that fool you its one of very deep spiritual meaning. I would like to share with you some reflections I have from what he said.

In the book he speaks of "Being formed in the womb of Mary" i think this is a very beautiful image that is only more enhanced by what he says next. He reminds us that we are to "be like Jesus" we are to in fact "become little Jesus's" dieing to ourselves and Jesus taking us over more and more. He describes Jesus in terms of Pottery, with Mary being the mold. For those that know anything about Pottery you know that when you make a mold you start from an Original. This is where i would like to center my post around. God the Father Begot The Son, as the great C.S. Lewis points out there is a difference between Begetting and making 'men beget men, men make statues'. God the Father Begot The Son, The Love between The Father and The Son was so perfect so pure that the same as a man and a womans love expressed in The Holy communion of marriage begets a child so too did the Intercourse between the Father and Son. The Holy Spirit Then Crafted out of fallen man a vessel from which God would become mean in. He selected one woman from all other women, then before her conception plucked her up out of fallin existence and created a mold from The Son.

Take just a moment and consider this, Christians of all stripes believe that to one extent or another the Eucharist is special it is Either (As Catholics and Orthodox believe) Truly the body and blood of Jesus Christ, or (as Protestants believe) it is a "just a symbol". But she a mere creature prostrated herself before God "I am a hand maid of The Lord". She for 9 months Carried the God/Man inside of her. She like all mothers with their infants felt him grow inside her. Her blood coursed through his veins, they breathed with the same lungs, the felt the same feelings, they shared the intercourse of a Mother and Child. Is it any wonder that when she says "all generations shall call me Blessed"(Luke1:48) it is not with boasting pride but instead with complete humility of heart. Indeed blessed she is, but not just among all women but among all human kind. Jesus received his Divinity from The Father but his Humanity he received from The Mother, a lowly hand maid who even preserved before all the ages was not fit to carry the sandals of The Christ let alone conceive bring to term and bare Him. Who is worthy of that? It is only through Grace she was worthy so how much less worthy are we to receive Him in the Eucharist? Only by the Grace of God we are saved indeed, only by His Grace do we even exist. How Awesome and how Horrifying.

She a woman is the Mother of Christ, the Mother of Christianity. Can anyone look upon her with anything other than Awe and Compassion? If we are not Worthy to be her foot stool how much less His! Christ says "He who knows the Son knows the Father" to be brothers in Christ to be brothers of Christ and to be members of the body of Christ is not only (as St. Louis Marie de Montfort puts it) "to have God as his Father but Mary as his mother". And who is this woman unworthy? She is the one who prompts Jesus to preform His first Miracle but she is also the one who says "Do whatever he tells you" (Lk9:35), and does she not echo this same message to us today? When one looks to her for inspiration does she not say to us "If you love me love my Son". Does she not crush the head of the serpent (Gen2) and say 'Not I but my Son in me'? If God truly is a potter should we the wet clay not say, should we not beg "God in the waters of baptism i am as wet clay, place me then in that mold formed by the Holy Spirit which holds the image of Your Son" . Let me love you Mary, not because you are great, but because God is Great and he does great things in and through you. Let us say then "Mother if it is God's will let me be formed in your womb as wet clay into a mold."

There is a famous story of St. Maximilian Kolbe receiving a Vision of the Blessed Mother in which she presents to him two crowns and asks him which he will chose the white or the red. If he chooses the White he will live a chaste life if he chooses the red he will die a martyrs death. He being formed in her to the image of Christ chose as Christ did both crowns.

Mother of God pray for us.
St. Maximilian Kolbe pray for us.
Holy Jesus let us be formed in your image.
Holy Spirit pour forth Grace upon us.
Holy Father protect us.
